Our Role

As Her Majesty’s personal representative, it is the Lord-Lieutenant’s prime duty to uphold the dignity of the Crown. Other responsibilities include: arranging and escorting Royal visits, assessing nominations for the Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service, presenting awards and honours on behalf of Her Majesty, and officiating at Citizenship ceremonies.

Assisting the Lord-Lieutenant is a Vice Lord-Lieutenant and a number of Deputy Lieutenants who are commissioned by each Lord-Lieutenant, subject to confirmation by the Secretary of State that the Queen does ‘not disapprove of the appointment’. The function of the Vice Lord-Lieutenant and a Deputy Lieutenant is to assist in the performance of any public duty performed by the Lord-Lieutenant.

The Lord-Lieutenant and his Deputies assess and support candidates for various awards to local people deserving of recognition for their contributions socially, culturally and civically to the community. They act as a liaison between the area of Lieutenancy and the Royal Family to arrange messages of congratulations for milestone birthdays and special anniversaries.

As the Queen’s representative, the Lord-Lieutenant presents BEMs, Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service, Queen’s Awards for Enterprise and Queen’s Guide and Scout Awards. The Lord-Lieutenant can also present other decorations and awards such as OBEs and MBEs on behalf of the Royal Family when needed, and they officiate at Citizenship Ceremonies.

They may also be called upon to attend and participate at events within their Lieutenancy area, for example, openings of community ventures.

Maintaining links with Her Majesty’s Forces locally is a key role and has it’s foundation in the historic role of the Lord-Lieutenant. This proud tradition continues today but is expanded to include the Emergency Services, wider public and voluntary sector throughout Stirling and Falkirk.
